About Aero Club of Egypt

In the year 1910 Baron Imban started the erection of the new Cairo suburb Heliopolis, to promote the idea of the new residence complex he looked for the most sounding event, flying was the most recent development in the world, the first world Air Race was held in Egypt and “Aeroclub D’Egypte “ was established

The Event was organized in cooperation between Aero Club de France and Aero Club d’Egypte, it was held under the patronage of H.E. Prince Mohamed Aly Pasha

The organizing committee was headed by H.E Prince Ahmed Fouad Pasha the President of Aero Club d’Egypte, the achievement required was to cover the distance between Heliopolis and the Pyramids with only two landings, another premium was awarded to the plane that gained the maximum height

Beginning Gliding In Egypt
  • In December 1933 the Aero Club of Egypt hosted the FAI general conference
  • In this occasion Taher Pasha the president met Cont Almase the president of the Aero Club of Hungary
  • They decided to launch the gliding activities in Egypt by importing Zoglen gliders and train young men.
  • Two Zoglen Gliders were imported from Germany ( for solo flights , there were no dual gliders at the moment).
  • The towing device was an old American car, one of the rear wheels was disassembled and replaced by the towing wire drum .
Gliding in The Desert of Almasa
  • Training went on, many of the young men , university students were enthusiastic to learn gliding
  • Cont Almase hold the Egyptian Gliding license No. 1, and he was the only instructor at the moment.
  • The Training site was the desert between heliopolis and Old Cairo international Airport known today as Almasa .
  • When the Second world war broke up The British forces suspended gliding and sequestered the gliders.
  • Cont Alamse was accused to be German agent.
The Egyptian Gliding Institute

After the second world war was over, the young men got back their gliders, a talent engineer Mr El Guindy repaired the gliders to fly again. In 21st. January 1951 the ministerial council issued a decree to establish The Egyptian Gliding institute, the Institute had its base in the desert of Heliopolis near the Air forces head quarters, the activities developed and Egypt was ranked in the 4th. Position in gliding world wide.

The number of active pilots was developing, both mails and females, and the activities extended to duration flights and cross country

Sports

Aeromodelling

The FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM) conducts FAI's aeromodelling and spacemodelling activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions.

Aeromodelling, although it did not yet bear that name, predates “full-size” aviation. The greatest pioneers of human flight, from Cayley, Lilienthal, the Wrights and Levavasseur to Blériot, Ferber, Farman and Messerschmitt, initially used model aircraft to test the solutions they were in the process of designing. This just goes to show how long the history of aeromodelling is. Model aircraft contests were organized as early as 1905, designed as entertaining and accessible sideshows inspired by a gradual emergence of powered airplanes.

Aeromodelling swiftly gained popularity from the 1930s onwards. Radio control was not yet highly developed – and was not to be so until the 1950s – so it was almost exclusively free flying and control-line aircraft that were used.

Shortly before the Second World War, the first international competitions were organized in England and Germany.

1955 saw the début of aerobatics in competition. The first world championships were held five years later. Model spacecraft were invented in the early 1960s in the United States and the first world championships were held in 1972.

Aeromodelling today is above all the most significant FAI discipline in terms of numbers of flyers: it has been estimated that there are more than a million enthusiasts all over the world. There are now a great many aeromodelling categories, be it for airplanes (extensible engines, piston engine, jet engine, electric and even solar powered engines), seaplanes, gliders, helicopters and space models.

Ballooning

The FAI Ballooning Commission (CIA) conducts FAI ballooning activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions.

Competitive ballooning test pilots' skills in Distance, Speed (over short and long distances) and Navigational Precision. Each flight usually involves several tasks.

Competition balloons are usually 180-2200m3 in size. Competitions often take place in the early morning or late afternoon, times more suitable for the light wind conditions needed for initial inflation and safe landings. Each balloon carries a GPS flight recorder and a tracker-unit that transmits the balloon's position back to the starting area - enabling spectators to follow the competition.

The most historic ballooning event is the annual Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett for gas balloons, created in 1906 and revived in 1983 after being discontinued at the outbreak of World War II. The balloon which flies the furthest distance from the start-point wins.

Drones

As the world governing body for all air sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee, the FAI is responsible for world drone sports.

Drone racing is the newest air sport within the FAI. Driven by the development of easily available technology, drones have been brought tens of thousands of new people into the world of air sports very quickly. In countries across the world, whether it's flying a drone for photography, racing drones, or using drones for business, it is clear that a whole new world of aerial activity is opening up.

From 31 August to 2 September 2018 the FAI will organize the FAI International Drones Conference and Expo in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Gliding

The FAI Gliding Commission (IGC) conducts FAI's gliding activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions with the exception of glider aerobatics.

Gliding involves engineless aircraft that move buy use of raising air known as thermals, which are cause by the sun heating the ground which in turn heats the air above it; after locating a thermal, a glider pilot will circle within the area of rising air to gain height. Other types of rising air include ridge lift, mountain waves and convergences of different air masses.

International Championships are run all over the world. Pilots selected on the basis of their results in competitions at home can enter biennial FAI European Gliding Championships which alternate with World Championships. In an European Championships year, there are also separate World Championships for Junior pilots, up to their 26th birthday year and for female pilots.

The separate female competitions were established not to discriminate but to encourage women to take their flying further as many fail to do due to the demands of family and other duties.

The FAI Sailplane Grand Prix sees the world's best glider pilots compete in the Final after qualifying from events around the world. Races have a simple regatta start and a first-over-the-line finish, and are designed to be exciting for spectators and raise gliding's profile in the media; GPS technology enable spectators to follow aircrafts' progress live on the internet.

Parachuting

Fast and intense! Just two of the watchwords commonly associated with the practice of skydiving. Add "free" and "fun" and you have the basic ingredients of a sport that tends to reflect the way of life of those practicing it. Skydiving can be a lifestyle sport, but at the highest level of international competition, to the few aiming for true excellence, skydiving is an athletic challenge. One that depends on physical conditioning and mental training, on hard work and stern discipline, and on imagination.

The FAI Parachuting Commission (IPC) conducts FAI's parachuting activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions.

Power and Glider Aerobatics

All FAI aerobatics international championships (powered and glider aircraft), competitions and record activities are conducted under the direction of the FAI Aerobatics Commission (CIVA).

Aerobatics has been performed in aircraft almost since the first flight of a powered aircraft. In the early years before World War I, aerobatics served as entertainment for crowds fascinated by these new aerial machines. Later, it became an essential part of a military pilot’s training and utilized in combat. In more recent decades, it has been recognized as an important part in a pilot’s training in order to make him or her more proficient in controlling their aircraft in all flight attitudes.

The challenge of performing aerobatic figures precisely led to the development of aerobatic competition. The first competitions were held in the early 1930’s, at the Olympics in Berlin in 1936, and at various national competitions after World War II. FAI recognized the need for a sanctioned World Championships which led to that first post-war competition in 1960 (1st World Aerobatic Champion Ladislav Bezak shown right).

World Championships in Power are held every two years and in Gliders every year. Continental Championships are held in the off years. Pilots who compete in World and Continental Championships are selected by their FAI member organizations and compete both individually and as teams.

Rotorcraft

The FAI Rotorcraft Commission (CIG) conducts FAI's rotary-wing activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions.

The first machines with flapping wings or with rotary wings (helicopters) were thought up in the late 18th century, or even as early as the late 15th century, if reference is made once more to the work of the genius Leonardo da Vinci on the project he named Helix.

In fact, for a long time, research into rotorcraft kept encountering obstacles relating to propulsion and in-flight stability, the factors that control the machine’s movement around three axes: pitch, roll and yaw. Researchers in the field of rotary wings, researchers displayed great inventiveness as from the mid-19th century.

The first world rotorcraft championships were organised in 1971 in Bückeburg. Since the mid-1980s, they have been held on average every three years. The disciplines on the world championship program especially emphasize the rescue dimension of the helicopter.
